CONSTRUCTION OF THE INCLUSIVE TOILET IN WaterAid NEPAL

WaterAid Nepal and Splash Nepal, jointly agreed to construct model inclusive toilet in WaterAid premises,Nakhipot with the consideration of guideline for differently abled friendly construction, on March 9, 2018.

Splash Nepal as implementing partner completed the construction work within month. Since, today’s society needs proper consideration of differently able people, the environment must create equal importance and friendliness to those people. Considering the disability as just a phase, different organizations considered for any design of infrastructures. The inclusive toilet is so designed for easy utility for those person with Vision Impairment, deaf or hard of hearing, intellectual disability physical disability.

The construction of inclusive toilet was the imitative program. The tactile, laid on the pathway required maintenance during the phase of the construction. Directional and Positional tiles were used on the pathways. And the sign board was placed, sharing the direction of the toilet. The front aluminum wall was colored for better look with signage.

Following some parameters were considered:

  • Flooring should be slip-resistant, firm, and stable.
  • Where floor tiles, bricks or pavers are used, joints should be no wider than 6mm and placed on a uniform level to prevent potential tripping hazards.
  • External flooring material should be un-glazed, uniformly laid, durable and designed to drain off water from the surface.
  • Texture should be used at ramps, steps and obstructions.
  • All textured surfaces used as warning devices should be cane detectable and clearly differentiated from surrounding paving surfaces.
  • Ceramic tile used in wet areas should have non-slip and non-glare finishes.
  • Texture changes in the flooring should be used to help the visually impaired in access and mobility.
  • Provision of handrails for support in pathway and in front of door.
  • The ramp was managed with allowable slope.
